Hüfigletscher
The Hüfigletscher or Hüfifirn is a valley glacier in the south-western Glarus Alps , in the canton of Uri in central Switzerland . It is 7 km long, up to 3 km in the upper part, but hardly more than 500 m wide in the narrow valley area. With an area of 13 km², the Hüfigletscher forms the largest glaciated area in the Glarus Alps.

The Hüfigletscher has its origin on the southwest flank of the Clariden at around 3000 m above sea level. M. The upper part of the glacier forms a wide arena having a diameter of 3 km, flanked by the pinnacles of the warping horn ( 3295 m above sea level. M. ), Chammliberg ( 3215 m above sea level. M. ), Clariden ( 3267 m above sea level. M . ), Heimstock ( 3102 m above sea level ) and in the south of Düssistock ( 3256 m above sea level ). From this arena the valley glacier flows relatively steeply to the southwest into the Maderanertal , an eastern side valley of the Reuss in the municipality of Silenen . To the east of the Hüfi Glacier over the fissured hanging is Claridenblick pass or Hüfipass ( 2955 m above sea level. M. ) with the Claridenfirn connected. The glacier tongue is currently at 1650 m above sea level. M. behind a natural lake from which the Chärstelenbach flows.
Two huts of the Swiss Alpine Club SAC are on the edge of the Hüfigletscher: the Hüfihütte at 2334 m above sea level. M. on the north slope of the Grosse Düssi above the glacier tongue and the Planurahütte ( 2947 m above sea level ) on a rocky peak south of the Clariden Pass.
Little ice age
Since the high stage during the Little Ice Age around the middle of the 19th century, the Hüfigletscher has retreated around 2 km. Although the nutrient area of the glacier is only at an altitude of 2800 m to 3000 m above sea level. M. lies, the glacier ice reaches up to 1650 m above sea level. M. down. The glacier tongue is one of the lowest in the Alps because it is located in a very narrow, shady valley. The Hüfisee was created under the glacier tongue .
