Heribert Hellenbroich
Heribert Hellenbroich (born May 14, 1937 in Cologne ; † July 10, 2014 in Cologne- Roggendorf / Thenhoven ) was President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution from 1983 to 1985 and President of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) in August 1985 .
Life
Hellenbroich grew up in Cologne, attended the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium there and then studied law and political science in Cologne and Göttingen . In 1966 he joined the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV). In 1981 he was appointed Vice President and in 1983, after Richard Meier was put into temporary retirement , he took over the management of this agency. Hellenbroich was rejected in circles of the ruling CDU / CSU and the intelligence services as too young for the office.
On August 1, 1985, he moved to the BND as President, and Ludwig-Holger Pfahls was his successor as BfV President . However, Hellenbroich's tenure at the BND was short-lived. After the government director and group leader in the counterintelligence of the BFV Hans Tiedge on 19 August 1985 in the GDR overflowed was joined Hellenbroich August 27, 1985 after just four weeks of office and became the hiatus added. Hellenbroich had to testify before an investigative committee of the German Bundestag and was discredited by Engelbert Rombach, the department head of counter-espionage in the BfV. Hellenbroich is said to have made "serious factual errors" when monitoring the telephone of the then presidential office secretary Margarete Höke, and due to his "hasty, frivolous manner", Hellenbroich would have missed the chance to win a top man "at the center of an opposing intelligence service" for cooperation. Before the committee of inquiry, each of the executives blamed others for being informed or not informed about the precarious way of life at Tiedge.
After the end of his intelligence career, Hellenbroich took over the management of the security service provider Industrie- und Handelsschutz GmbH (IHS) in Frankfurt am Main (today Wisag ).
Hellenbroich died on July 10, 2014, six days after his wife Gisela (née Engel, * May 22, 1937). He was buried on August 14, 2014 after a memorial service in the local church of St. Johann Baptist in Cologne-Roggendorf / Thenhoven at the Cologne-Thenhoven cemetery.
Hellenbroich's younger brother, Anno Hellenbroich, was the second deputy federal chairman of the European Workers' Party in the context of the so-called LaRouche movement and at the same time managing director of the organisation's own magazine , Executive Intelligence Review (EIR).
