Thomas Haldenwang (born May 21, 1960 in Wuppertal ) is a German lawyer , political officer and President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) since November 15, 2018 .

Life

After graduating from high school , Haldenwang did his military service in the Navy . He then studied law at the University of Marburg . He completed his legal clerkship at the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court in 1991 with the second state examination . This was followed by an employment as a consultant in the department for service law and as a personnel officer at the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) and from 2000 to 2006 as a division head at the Federal Office of Administration . From 2006 Haldenwang worked again in the Federal Ministry of the Interior, this time as head of the department for career law and managing director of the Federal Personnel Committee .

Haldenwang has been with the BfV since 2009. Until the end of 2012 he headed Department Z (Central Services) and was Vice President of the authority from August 2013 . On November 15, 2018 Haldenwang was appointed President of the BfV . He succeeded Hans-Georg Maaßen .

After his appointment, he announced an increased focus of the BfV on right-wing extremism . The number of employees who devote themselves exclusively to this phenomenon should be increased from 200 to 300. During the investigation into the murder of Walter Lübcke , Haldenwang said that in the area of ​​right-wing extremism, a scenario of " sleepers " - similar to the area of ​​Islamism - might have to be taken into account and adjusted accordingly. By the classification of the AFD grouping the wing as "backed right-wing effort" he said to have become the enemy of right-wing radicals according to Spiegel.

Haldenwang is a member of the CDU and of Protestant faith.
