Scheidegg (Forest ZH)

The Scheidegg is a mountain in the Tössbergland , Zurich Oberland . It forms the highest point in the municipality of Wald . It is a range of hills with some peaks almost the same height: the highest point is 1246  m above sea level. M. at Alp Überzütt , on the ridge between Brandegg and Hüttchopf . The named peaks are Vorderbrandegg ( 1241  m above sea level ), Brandegg ( 1238  m above sea level ) and Hüttchopf (1170 m). Upstream are the Scheidegghoger (1170 m), with the Gasthaus Alp Scheidegg (1196 m), the Josenberg (1085 m), and in the north the Dürrspitz (1202 m) and the Oberegg (1107 m). The canton border with St. Gallen runs over the Hüttchopf.

The Vordere Töss runs along the eastern flank of the Brandegg , opposite the Tössstock , to the Tössscheidi , where the Vordere and Hintere Töss merge to form the Töss . The Brandegg forms the watershed between Töss and Jona . The Jona flows on the western flank and the Schmittenbach on the southern flank towards Sagenraintobel and Wald. The Hischwilerbach rises from Scheidegg and flows into the Jonatal via Hischwil, Hintererli and Grosswis; on the Brandegg the Lochbach, which flows into the Jona via Loch, Raad and Neutal. The Züttbach rises at the Hüttchopf and finds the Töss via Mühlebach ( Fischenthal ).

Alp Scheidegg was first documented in 1517, in 1760 it was renewed and enlarged. In 1813 the Alp was auctioned by the Canton of Zurich. In 1845, the then owner Heinrich Brändli bought the Überzütt property, which has been part of Alp Scheidegg since then.

Since the beginning of the 20th century it has been owned by the Brändle von Alt-St. Johann. On February 25, 1925, it was destroyed by fire in a foehn storm. On the initiative of Otto Oberholzer von Raad (1872–1941) a cooperative was founded on March 31st with the aim of rebuilding the alp. A spa and inn was built next to the stable . The married couple Josef and Berta Steuble-Fuster were selected from 90 applicants. From April 1, 1926, they ran the alp and restaurant as tenants.

Between 1936 and 1947 the Scheidegg was used as a starting point for gliding .

After Josef Steuble's death in 1944, Berta Steuble continued to run the Alp, followed by her daughter Cäcilia with husband Bernhard Schnyder-Steuble, the Züger family from 2001 to 2015, and the Rastoder family since 2015.

Around 150 cattle graze on 38 hectares on Alp Scheidegg in summer.
