The student Miki Takekasa ( 武 笠 美 姫 ) is a loner, shy and with no friends in high school. But then her classmate Aya Takayashiki ( 高 屋 敷 綾 ) takes her on an excursion so that they can have fun together. In the end, both end up in a lively district of the city of Kyoto , where they are no longer allowed to be in the evening according to the school rules. But they see their student representative Midori Ono ( 大野 翠 ) and follow her into a game shop where Midori works. She rebukes her classmates, but her boss invites her to the board game Marrakech . The pupils have fun and the game-loving Midori also takes part. From then on, the three girls meet regularly to try out new games, which Midori usually brings with her. The shy Miki slowly becomes more open and learns to deal better with other people. Shōta Tanoue ( 田 上 翔 太 ) joins them in a round of cockroach poker . Her classmate is secretly in love with Aya, which Miki quickly notices, whereas Aya thinks he loves Midori. During a game of diamonds , the three Ayas get to know sister Hana and her friend Kyōko Maki. Maki's rough manner reminds Miki of her childhood, when she was bullied by other children. But Maki helps Miki over her hesitation in the game and finally turns out to be the girl Miki has already protected in the past.
Having loved games for a long time, Midori wants to become a game designer herself. But she doesn't dare to tell others about it until she is pressured by the vice-president of the student council to help her with the school festival as in previous years. Midori prefers to play games instead of student council work. In a game 6 takes! Midori can finally convince her of her enthusiasm for games. But it was only through an American game designer who visited her boss that Midori dared to show her friends the first game she had designed. Because he says that true designers want to show their games to others and let them try them. Through the test game, Midori then learns what she can improve on her game and how important it is to try out the design with players.
In the hot summer, the three girls drive together to see Miki's aunt, who runs an inn in Kanazawa . There they get to know Goita and play it together with a boy who, like her, cannot go to the beach because of the rain. Miki remembers the difficulties she had as a small child in understanding game strategies and helps the boy master the game. On another summer excursion with Maki in the country, Miki brought Monjiro cubes with him. The two play different syllable dice games and get to know each other better. Later the three girls meet and want to prepare a games café for the school festival. But the student council vice-president refuses because she has not yet forgiven Midori's refusal. The President, on the other hand, visits the game store and is convinced of the excitement of board games at a game Die Insel , and accepts their proposal for the festival. In the time before the festival, the three finally found a newly opened games café in the neighborhood, where they met Emilia. The game-loving German has only lived in Japan for some time and recently moved to the city. They get to know her better over a round of Keltis and since Emi is going to her school soon, they invite her to help at the festival. Thanks to Emi's support with advertising, the café at the school was a complete success and the student council joined in and was invited by Miki to play Dobble . There is also Ryūji Yoshioka, a popular student from the Kendō club and friend of Shōta Tanoue, whom he accompanied here. Yoshioka falls in love with Miki while playing.
After the festival is over, the friends show Emi the city. They also come to the game store, where they play Elfenland , one of Emi's favorite games, together. She remembers her friends who stayed in Germany - especially her best friend, with whom she wanted to create a game herself. In order to collect inspiration for new games, Emi asks about traditional Japanese games and so the four of them try a Japanese children's game similar to Ochs am Berg . After a test, Emi immediately comes up with a few ideas to make the game more exciting. Midori is frustrated at first that Emi's ideas are so much easier. But Emi explains that after Alex Randolph all games are unfinished and continue to develop and gives Midori new courage.
After Aya's father, an animal photographer, comes back to Japan after a long time, he still has little time for his family and when he can't even come to the Christmas party in Emi's café, there is an argument with his daughter. In the game store he finds Aya again and the boss of the store lets them play blokus together , which they can talk about and learn what they love about each other. Even if her father can't come to the party, Aya has a lot of fun there when she plays Ladies & Gentlemen with her friends and Tanoue and Yoshioka . the two boys are happy to play as a couple with the girls they love, but don't dare to confess their love this evening either. When a competition for game designers soon followed, to which the American game publisher Midori also invited, she finally wanted to complete her own game. But after a test game of the improved version, her friends are satisfied, but not her boss. After a tip from Emi, Midori throws herself into work and finally completes the game to her satisfaction. Although she doesn't get very far in the competition, she is invited to the publishing house as a promising talent. At the end of the school year everyone talks about their future plans. Emi might want to go to Germany again to become a game designer, and Aya like her father to travel the world. Miki, however, had her best year so far and would rather that everything stay the way it is. She desperates how everyone but herself is making plans for the future and the friendships will soon be over. But the three friends cheer them up again and assure them that they will always stay friends and find time to play games together.
