The railcar HBE T 4 was a railcar of the Halberstadt-Blankenburg Railway (HBE).

It was procured for operation on the company's network as the fourth and last railcar. At the time of its commissioning, the number of railcars used by the company was significantly reduced. After 1949 it was taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR as VT 135 543 and was the only railcar in the company to receive an EDP designation with 186 031-1. The vehicle was in active use until 1969 and was retired in 1971. It is no longer there today.

history

Since the previous HBE railcars had proven themselves, a fourth vehicle was ordered from the Wismar wagon factory . Like the first two, it had a diesel-mechanical power transmission with the Mylius gearbox , but both axles were driven. The railcar entered service on October 19, 1940. The Wismar wagon factory delivered a control car with him. The railcar only went into operation at a time when liquid fuel was quota for the civilian sector as a result of the Second World War .

The railcar was rarely used until 1945. Only after the Second World War was it used together with the HBE T 2 for travel around Halberstadt . The railcar was in constant use at Blankenburg station from January 1, 1950 . The T 4 was the company's only railcar that was given an EDP designation (186 031-1). In the literature there are various dates of storage and retirement; one source says it was shut down in 1969 and taken out of service in 1971, the other said it was taken out of service in 1969.

Constructive features

There is little to be found in the literature about the technical description of the railcar. It was only slightly longer than the T 2 (300 mm). With roughly the same number of seats, the loading area of the T 4 is about three times as large as that of the T 2 (6 m 2 compared to 2 m 2 ).

The drive system was designed with an eight-cylinder four-stroke Deutz A 8 M 517 diesel engine around 40 hp more than the T 2 . The engine got the extra power from two additional cylinders and the larger cylinder dimensions. The two driven axles gave the T 4 a mass of 19 tons, seven tons more than the T 2 .
