Heinrich Alfred Schmid

Heinrich Alfred Schmid (born July 19, 1863 in Basel ; † April 1, 1951 there ) was a Swiss art historian .

Life

A native of Basel Heinrich Alfred Schmid devoted himself to filed Matura studies of Protestant theology and the history of philosophy at the Universities of Basel , Berlin and Göttingen . After completing the theological state examination in Basel in 1886, he turned to studying art history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , which he obtained there in 1888 with the academic degree of Dr. phil. completed.

In the same year Heinrich Alfred Schmid took up a position as an unskilled worker in the inventory of art monuments in Bavaria headed by Berthold Riehl, which he held until 1891. In 1892 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in art history at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg , and in 1896 he moved to the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin in the same position . In 1901, Heinrich Wölfflin's successor took over the extraordinary professorship in art history at the University of Basel, and in 1904 he accepted a position in the same position at the German University in Prague . In 1912 he accepted an offer for the chair of art history at the Georg-August University in Göttingen , which he held until 1918. In 1919 he finally returned to Basel, where he held the full professorship in art history until his retirement in 1937. In addition, he worked from 1919 to 1925 as curator of the Basel public art collections . In 1919 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

Henrich Alfred Schmid's collected art historical writings appeared in 1933.
