Haïlji (born May 3, 1955 in Kyŏngju , Kyŏngsangbuk-do ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Haïlji, whose real name is Im Chong-ju, was born on May 3, 1955 in Kyŏngju in North Kyŏngsang Province . He studied creative writing at Chung-Ang University . From 1980 to 1983 he worked as a high school teacher. In 1983 he went to France for further training. He did his Masters in French Literature at the University of Poitiers . He then did his doctorate in the same subject at the University of Limoges . In 1989 he returned to Korea.

He is a professor of creative writing at Dongduk Women's University .

Haïlji published his first novel Die Straße zur Rennbahn ( 경마장 가는 길 ) in 1990. The controversial work brought him quick recognition, but not only in a positive sense. The novel is about a Korean intellectual who lived in France for several years, getting used to Western culture and returning to South Korea. It is described how difficult it is for him to find his way back into Korean society and that he develops a critical attitude towards its code of conduct and customs. Over the next three years, Haïlji published four more novels: For the racetrack , racetrack at an intersection , alder tree at the racetrack and what happened on the racetrack . All of them shook the Korean literary world with their unique, innovative approach to depicting contradictions in everyday Korean life. Conservative critics have waged a series of heated debates known as the "racetrack controversy". Haïlji's later works are, among other things, characterized by a dreamy atmosphere and secured him an enthusiastic readership.

In 2009, Republic of Užupis , a fictional novel about Lithuania, was published. Haïlji has already visited Lithuania several times and was mainly inspired by the capital. In 2013 the book was translated into Lithuanian. The author's special connection to Lithuania is also evident in his long friendship with the Lithuanian poet Kornelijus Platelis .

Many of Haïlji's works were used in films or plays. The writer is also assigned an important role in the development of modern Korean cinema. Haïlji is also active in the field of poetry and published his works not only in Korean, but also in English ( Blue meditations of the clocks ) and French ( Les hirondelles dans mon tiroir ).
