Haageocereus albispinus is a species of plant in the genus Haageocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet albispinus means '(Latin albispinosus) richly white prickly'.

description

Haageocereus albispinus grows columnar with three to ten shoots branching from the base and reaches heights of up to 2 meters. The slender dark green shoots, densely covered by thorns and hairs, have a diameter of up to 6 centimeters. There are 25 to 26 low ribs . From the 6 to 7 millimeters apart, white felted areoles arise 35 to 40 white, twisted hairs up to 1 centimeter in length. The occasional single central spine , mostly missing, is piercing needle-like and up to 1.5 centimeters long. The approximately 25 radial spines, which are initially light yellow, later become silver-white and are up to 1.3 centimeters in length.

The narrow, funnel-shaped, greenish-white to green flowers reach a diameter of up to 4.5 centimeters. The ellipsoid, pink fruits have a diameter of up to 3.5 centimeters and are covered with long white hair.

Distribution and systematics

Haageocereus albispinus is widespread in Peru in the Lima region in the valley of the Río Santa Eulalia .

It was first described as Peruvocereus albispinus in 1948 by John Frank Akers . Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Haageocereus in 1958 . A nomenclatory synonym is Haageocereus chosicensis var. Albispinus (Akers) Backeb. .
