The Habitat Education Center and Wildlife Sanctuary is a 88 acres (35.6 hectares ) comprehensive reserve at Belmont in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .
Protected area
The sanctuary, 6 mi (9.7 km ) outside of Boston , consists primarily of evergreen forests, green spaces, and a few lakes. A total of 2.5 mi (4 km) of hiking trails are available to visitors, 0.5 mi (0.8 km) of which are barrier-free . The main house, built in Georgian architecture , can be rented for weddings and other occasions.
The reserve is attached to the Robert Treat Paine Estate in Waltham by the 7 mi (11.3 km) Western Greenway Trail . This corridor connects 20 protected areas with a total of 1,200 acres (4.9 km² ) in Waltham, Lexington and Belmont . The animal and plant species found there include, in particular, wild turkeys , foxes , forest frogs , great horned owls , ornamental turtles , stemless lady's slipper and arisaema .
