The company Hacı Bekir Lokum ve Şekerli Mamüller Sanayii A.Ş. is the oldest Turkish company and Lokum manufacturer in Istanbul . It has existed since 1777.

history

In 1776 the apprentice confectioner Bekir Efendi came from Ara in Kastamonu to Istanbul and opened a Lokum shop in the city center. Lokum was already known in Anatolia in the 14th century. When beet sugar came to Turkey, Bekir Efendi was the first to use sugar and cornstarch instead of honey and flour to refine the texture . After the pilgrimage to Mecca, Ali Muhiddin Bekir received the honorary title Hacı and from then on called himself Ali Muhiddin Hacı Bekir . Later he was appointed chief confectioner at the Ottoman court and at the same time received the Osmanje Order, First Class.

Companies

The pastry shop is in the fifth generation in 2011 and has so far supplied numerous Padishahs and Turkish presidents. Export goods also go to Germany, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, Latvia, Estonia, Greece, England and the USA.

The last descendant of the Hacı Bekirs family still makes Lokum in the original shop in the Bahçekapı district below Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque . The recipes are family secrets. In the early 19th century, Hacı Bekirs Lokum was known in Europe as Turkish Delight . Hacı Bekir currently has four branches in Istanbul, two of which are in Eminönü , one in Kadıköy and one in Beyoğlu .
