The Spelle-Venhaus port is located on the Dortmund-Ems Canal in Venhaus in the Emsland , municipality of Spelle , between canal kilometers 122.049 and 123.4 km. The port has a total of twelve berths for European ships, two of them in the dock and ten at the parallel port. The size of the port area is 50  hectares , of which 35 hectares are occupied by industry and commerce. The main goods handled are mineral oils, building materials, animal feed and bread grain. The port is trimodally connected by the rail connection to the Rheine – Spelle railway line , which also runs to Osnabrück via the Tecklenburger Nordbahn , as well as the nearby federal motorway 30 .

location

The port area is located south of Spelle in Venhaus. The southern part of the port is located in North Rhine-Westphalia in the area of the city of Rheine ; to the west of the port is Salzbergen and to the east Dreierwalde . The federal highway 70 crosses the canal directly at the port and leads to the nearby federal highway 30 with the junction Rheine-Nord. The Duisburg – Quakenbrück railway line , which has been dismantled north of Spelle, enables rail traffic to Rheine. In addition, the Tecklenburger Nordbahn branches off in Altenrheine via Recke and Mettingen to Osnabrück.

history

With the construction of the Dortmund-Ems Canal in 1899, an unloading facility was also created in Venhaus. This was initially designed as a parallel port with the length of a ship. During the Second World War, there was a temporary unloading point for the Salzbergen refinery on the western side of the canal . From 1970 the port was gradually expanded by a private company, so between 1972 and 1974 the shoreline was moved back 20 meters and a 200 meter long berth was created. After 1974 the municipality of Spelle took over the construction work on the port; on October 8, 1976, the first pile-driving for the new sheet piling took place. The lying area was extended to 270 meters and the trapezoidal reversible pool was created. A port with oil barriers completed the port in the following period. A total of DM 3 million was invested in the expansion, which was also financed by the Emsland district as well as the municipality and the federal waterway administration. On July 17, 1978, the joint municipality of Spelle founded "Hafen Spelle-Venhaus GmbH".

growth

In the following years numerous companies settled in the port area. The start was made in 1959 by the Herbers company, in 1979 a feed factory of the Bröring group of companies was established and in 1992 a part of the Hemmelter Mühle from Rheine.

In 2003, DM 725,000 was invested in the access and lighting of the port. In 2004, the unloading facility at the Salzbergen refinery was expanded and a compressed air oil barrier was added. In 2006 the first plans to expand the port were made, as the existing space could hardly meet the demand.

First construction phase

After intensive land negotiations, which were completed in July 2010, the expansion of the port began. A 1.4 km long access road was laid out, and drainage facilities and a rain retention basin were also built. To compensate, 27 hectares of forest and a sand lizard area were created. After the road accesses to the B 70 and the southern bypass had been created, the first construction phase was completed. A total of 4.4 million euros were invested between March and October 2011.

Second construction phase

The first groundbreaking for the second construction phase of the port was carried out on September 19, 2012 by Jörg Bode . By September 2013 a 720 m long quay wall was built and the canal in the port area was widened by 20 m. A 50 m wide transhipment area was set up on the bank. 154,000 m³ of soil was moved here and 11.2 million euros were invested.

Track connection

The third construction phase was the track connection to Spelle train station from January to July 2015. Six million euros were invested in the 4.2 kilometer long route. Between February and June 2015, 338 track slabs were laid in the port area. In the area of the Spelle train station, a switch with the number 10 was built into the route to Rheine , which branches off to the port route. As the first test load, gravel for the Herbers company based in the port was transferred by train on December 17, 2015.

At the port there are two tracks parallel to the port basin. At the end, the two tracks come together again and are led in an arc away from the harbor basin to the mill in the harbor area, where up to ten wagons can be unloaded. An expansion of the track system is planned.

The tracks of the port railway belong to the municipality of Spelle, the connecting line has been leased by Regionalverkehr Münsterland , which also operates the port railway with its own and third-party locomotives.

Regular operation of the track system began on October 17, 2016 with a train that had loaded 1,823 tons of bread wheat for the Emsland Flour Mills . Since then, several trains with wheat have run to the mill every week.

In mid-September 2018, the 100th train with wheat was received at Emsland Flour Mills . A total of 175,000 tons of wheat were delivered by rail in less than two years. Compared to truck transport, 16,000 tons of CO 2 were saved.

In 2019, the further track expansion in the port is to be tackled.

outlook

Further expansion measures are currently to be carried out at the port. For example, the tracks are to be expanded to form a curve that simplifies maneuvering and increases rail capacity. In addition, a siding to the feed plant of the Bröring Group is to be created. The port of call is also to be extended.
