The Port of Tianjin ( Tianjin Gang , Chinese  天津 港 , Pinyin tiānjīn gǎng ), formerly known as Tanggu Port , is the largest port in northern China and the main port in the Beijing area . It is located on the west bank of Bohai Bay at the mouth of the Hai He River , 170 km southeast of Beijing and 60 km east of the city of Tianjin .

It is the largest man-made port in mainland China and one of the largest in the world (list here ). Its area was 107 km 2 at the end of 2010 ; the total length of the quays was almost 32 km and there were 140  berths for ships.

location

map

The port is part of the Tianjin Municipality Binhai , the main SEZ ( Special Economic Zones of the People's Republic of China ) from northern China. It is located directly east of the Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Area (TEDA). The term "Tianjin Xingang" ( Chinese  天津 新港 , Pinyin Tiānjīn Xīngǎng , English Tianjin New Port ) strictly speaking only names the main area of the seaport ; it is sometimes used for the whole port.

Bohai Bay is one of the three bays that together make up the Bohai Sea. The Bohai Sea is a fairly shallow (average depth 18 m) water area, the water of which has relatively little exchange with that of the Yellow Sea (it can take 40 to 200 years for the water to be exchanged). An enormous sediment entry from the Yellow River and the Haihe makes the water very cloudy.

history

In 1860 the port was opened as the port of Tanggu . On October 17, 1952, the port was reopened.

On August 12, 2015, several explosions occurred in the cargo port . There were many dead and injured.

meaning

In 2010 the port handled 413 million tons of goods and 10.1 million TEU containers . This made it the fourth largest in terms of tonnage and the eleventh largest in terms of container handling.

It is considered the third largest port in China (after the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port and the Port of Shanghai ) and the sixth largest container handling port. Ships operate from there to over 600 ports in around 180 countries around the world. It is located on more than 115 container liner routes that are used by ships of around 60 shipping companies, including all 20 of the largest. The port's capacity has increased in recent years; for 2015, a handling capacity of 550–600 million tons was forecast before the explosion.

operator

The operator is the Tianjin Port Company , a joint venture in which the General Nice Group has a 49% stake. The other 51% is owned by Tianjin Port (Group) Co., Limited.
