The ports of Shanghai in the People's Republic of China currently consist of five or ten facilities - depending on the count: the new deep-water port in Yangshan , the ports in the Pudong Special Economic Zone and old facilities on the Yangtze , the Qiantang River and the Huangpu . The port area is the world leader in total handling (since 2006, with the exception of 2008) and container handling (since 2010).

The ports have been operated by the Shanghai International Port Group since 2003 . It belongs to the SSE 50 index , the share index of 50 major Chinese companies on the Shanghai Stock Exchange .

history

As a seaport, Shanghai developed during the Qing Dynasty , outperforming Ningbo and Guangzhou . In 1842 Shanghai became a tract port as part of the “ unequal treaties ” with the colonial powers England, France, Japan and Germany . a. in this phase connection to international trade.

Just before the Second World War , Japan captured Shanghai in the Battle of Shanghai , which lasted from August 13 to November 9, 1937 .

The foreign concession areas were closed in 1947 with the withdrawal of the French .

In 2005, construction began on the Yangshan Deep Water Port on the Yangshan Islands in Hangzhou Bay. The result is an eleven kilometer long quay where up to 50 container ships can moor at the same time. Loading is to be largely automated. This port is thus a direct competitor to the Ningbo-Zhoushan port . The facility is connected to the city of Shanghai via the 32.5 km long six-lane Donghai Bridge . The first Chinese offshore wind farm Donghai Bridge is located near the bridge route .

In 2013, a 29 square kilometer free trade zone was opened in Pudong. It is seen as an economic experimental field for the entire country.
