The deep-water port Yangshan ( Chinese 洋山 深水港 , Pinyin Yángshān Shēnshuǐ Gǎng ) is a deep-water port in Shengsi County ( Zhoushan City ) in Hangzhou Bay 90 kilometers (as the crow flies) south of Shanghai and belongs to the port of Shanghai . The port, which was partially opened in 2005, is connected to the mainland via the Donghai Daqiao , a 32.5 km long bridge, which was also completed in 2005 and was integrated into the planned town of Lingang .
construction
This deep-water port became necessary in order to supplement the previous tide- dependent river ports on the banks of the Yangtze with a more efficient deep-water transshipment point. The port was built on and around the islands of Xiao Yang Shan and Da Yang Shan in the Chinese Sea (both are part of the rocky island group of Zhoushan, belonging to Zhejiang Province ). The families living on the archipelago (mainly fishermen) had to be relocated, some rocks were removed and used to fill new port areas. The construction phase of the port, which is to be expanded modularly, is scheduled to be completed in 2020.
The deep-water port has no rail link, so that the transport of goods to the surrounding area can only be carried out by truck in addition to transport by container feeder ships . Yangshan Port has the largest automated container terminal in the world. In 2017 there were 10 bridge and 40 gantry cranes on the 2350 meters of the quay, with 50 AGVs in operation. The terminal is to be expanded further so that a total of 26 bridge and 120 gantry cranes and 130 AGVs are to be used here.
