Hâfiz Osman ( Ottoman حافظ عثمان İA Ḥāfıẓ ʿOs̠mān ; * 1642 in Istanbul ; † December 3, 1698 ibid) was one of the most famous Ottoman calligraphers .

Life

Hâfiz Osman was a student of the calligraphers Şeyh Hamdullah , Derviş Ali and Suyolcuzade Mustafa Eyyubi and was under the protection of Köprülü Fazıl Mustafa Pascha . He was a member of the dervish order of the Sünbüliye, a branch of the Zeyniye. He also worked as a teacher of Sultan Mustafas II and Prince Ahmed (III) .

Hâfiz Osman is believed to be the inventor of the Ottoman expression of the Hilye-i Şerif , a calligraphic representation of the beauty of Muhammad's appearance and character, based on the writings of the hadith .

Preserved works by Hâfiz Osman, mainly calligraphic copies of the Koran and Hilyas, are now kept in the collection of the Topkapı Palace Museum in Istanbul , as well as in the Nasser D. Khalili collection.
