Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai ( Japanese 僕 は 友 達 が 少 な い , dt. "I don't have many friends"), also known by the abbreviation Haganai ( は が な い ), is a light novel written by the Japanese author Yomi Hirasaka - Series that can be assigned to the genres of his own , comedy and harem . It has been published by Media Factory since August 2009 . The story follows the student Kodaka Hasegawa, who has difficulty making friends because of his appearance. He's not alone in this, however, and soon finds himself in a school club whose members want to learn how to make real friendships.

The plot of the novel series was adapted for the PlayStation Portable through two manga series , an anime television series and a video game .

action

The protagonist Kodaka Hasegawa has a bad start as a school changer at the "St. Chronica School" ( 聖 ク ロ ニ カ 学園 , Sei Kuronika Gakuen ). Not only is he late for his first lesson, but he also walks into the classroom completely out of breath. With his dyed blond hair, his grim look and his panting voice, he leaves the impression of a violent delinquent on both the sensitive teacher and the students . The rumor spreads very quickly in the Catholic high school, and he doesn't even get the chance to clear up this misunderstanding.

One day when he is about to enter the classroom, he happens to witness a conversation between Yozora Mikazuki , which she is embarrassed and which leads to his amazement with her imaginary friend Tomo. In the following conversation, in which Yozora reveals her very rough tone, both have to admit that they have a big problem with social life. The dialogue at Yozora also gave rise to the idea of founding a school club, the Rinjin-bu ( 隣人 部 , “neighbor club”), the intention of which is to make friends and learn to socialize. In the following days, Yozora is busy taking on the formalities for establishing the club, engaging the still ignorant Kodaka directly as a club member.

But initially the club does not have enough members to be admitted. So the search for more club members begins and the school icon Sena Kashiwazaki joins them some time later , who, however, is in constant conflict with Yozora. She is followed by Yukimura Kusunoki , who pretends to be a weak man in women's clothes, and Rika Shiguma as a student in the form of a mad scientist with permanent sexual ulterior motives. The club's overseer is Maria Takayama , a young nun forced by Yozora , who is in constant conflict with Kodaka's younger sister, Kobato Hasegawa .

Together, the club members, shaped by various social problems, try to pursue their goal of making real friends, without really noticing in their various activities that they have actually already found them. At the same time, there is also the problem that all female characters fall in love with Kodaka equally.

main characters

Kodaka Hasegawa ( 羽 瀬 川 小鷹 , Hasegawa Kodaka )
He is the protagonist of the plot and actually a reserved and sincere student. However, since he is of English origin on his mother's side, he has lank blond hair and a rather grim facial expression. The people around him therefore prejudice him as a delinquent and try to avoid him. Due to some misunderstandings at the new school, this impression is reinforced, so that various rumors spread and he cannot find any connection.
Yozora Mikazuki ( 三 日月 夜空 , Mikazuki Yozora )
The dark-haired Yozora is particularly noticeable because of her very rugged and snooty behavior. This is repulsive to many of her classmates and so she is often alone. This goes so far that, among other things, she secretly talks to her imaginary friend Tomo. However, as it turns out later, she is a childhood friend of Kodaka. However, she met Kodaka at that time as a rowdy boy. Yozora, who was a little in love with him and wanted to present herself in girls' clothes, missed the opportunity when Kodaka surprisingly moved away.
Due to her aggressive, self-loving nature, however, there are always arguments and problems. In particular, she fights regularly with Sena, whereby she usually wins the duel. This continues with her relationship with Maria, who leads her by the nose, and Yukimura, who persuades her to work in maiden costume for the club to overcome their problems. Meanwhile, Rika is the only person against whom her verbal attacks come to nothing, which is why she gives up over time to try her hand at Rika.
Sena Kashiwazaki ( 柏 崎 星 奈 , Kashiwazaki Sena )
Sena is the daughter of the principal Pegasus Kashiwazaki and is actually a highly respected, beautiful and intelligent student. Still, she longs to pursue unusual hobbies and make real friends. After all, the male students are too much at the feet of the blonde Sena, while she is envied by the students. She considers herself perfect and is aware of her sometimes arrogant nature.
Within the school club, she enjoys spending her time playing video games, including bishōjo games (playing with pretty girls) and eroges , as it allows her to make (virtual) girl friends as long as she doesn't get into an argument with Yozora again. Because of her physique, Yozora repeatedly refers to her as Niku ( t , dt. “Meat”), which is a derogatory allusion to her lush bust size. Secretly, however, Sena likes this name, after all, it is the first nickname she was ever given. But since she repeatedly fails due to the verbal attacks from Yozora, she quickly bursts into tears, runs away and first needs a certain time to collect herself again.
Meanwhile, her relationship with Kobato is completely different. Kobato gives her the impression of a young sister who would like to keep her in different costumes all the time. To the displeasure of Kobato, who prefers to flee from her.
Yukimura Kusunoki ( 楠 幸 村 , Kusunoki Yukimura )
Yukimura is first introduced as a stalker by Kodaka and then as a man with numerous female attributes who is also a crossdresser . At the same time, Yukimura can also be influenced quickly and can be persuaded by Yozora, among others, that he can gain “masculinity” by serving under Kodaka. Since then, Yukimura has repeatedly worked as a maid in the club, repeatedly calling Kodaka Aniki (older brother). As it turns out later (Volume 5), Yukimura is not a boy, but a very easy to influence and shy girl. Until then, however, she tries with a certain self-image to comply with the wishes of her "big brother", even if she overshoots the mark and z. B. Forcing Maria to consume protein drinks against her will because Kodaka asked her to feed Maria healthily.
Rika Shiguma ( 志 熊 理科 , Shiguma Rika )
The pupil Rika is introduced as a kind of crazy scientist who keeps doing experiments for herself in isolation. However, when her life was saved by Kodaka after a failed experiment, she was also repeatedly represented as a member of the club. There she stands out mainly because of her ability to pervert everything and, as Fujoshi , she is particularly interested in Yaoi - Dōjinshi . The strange relationship between Kodaka and Yukimura comes in handy here.
Kobato Hasegawa ( 羽 瀬 川 小 鳩 , Hasegawa Kobato )
Kobato is Kodaka's younger sister and is actually still a middle school student. Still, she keeps going to the club because she has a close relationship with her brother and quickly becomes jealous and aggressive if she does not experience the affection she deems necessary. So much so that it becomes pretty clear that she has a brother complex. In particular, she sees Maria as a great rival, and the conflict between the two is fueled by the fact that Kobato has a great affection for vampires, darkness and macabre things. At least since she saw the anime Full Metal Necromancer (a reference to Fullmetal Alchemist ). So she speaks again and again in the jargon typical of Anime, puts on a red Gothic dress, wears a red contact lens on one side and pretends to be Reisy's VI Felicity Sumeragi . However, this facade collapses very quickly once she is excited and in a strong Kyushu begins to speak -Akzent. This only makes her all the more attractive to Sena.
Maria Takayama ( 高山 マ リ ア , Takayama Maria )
Maria, although she is the youngest of the group, is the head of the club. However, the nun-girl is very naive and can be blackmailed, fooled or seduced with sweets, so that the other club members (especially Yozora) can actually do whatever they want with her. Maria feels strongly drawn to Kodaka and, much to Kobato's discomfort, likes to refer to him as her brother. Because of this, and because of Kobato's dark acting, she is always at odds with her.
