location

The Main Valley Viaduct is located between the Hesseneck Kailbach stop and the former Friedrichsdorf stop (b Eberbach) , a few meters from the state border between Hesse and Baden-Württemberg on the Hessian side, but opposite Friedrichsdorf , a district of Eberbach .

Building description

The 173 meter long and 32.5 meter high Haintal viaduct spans the Itter side valley of the same name and its construction is a scaled-down copy of the Himbächel viaduct on the same route. It consists of a total of nine arches with a clearance of 15 meters , which are combined into three groups of three arches each. The pillars, which are usually 3 meters thick on the fighter, are reinforced to 5 meters between the three arch groups. A total of around 8500 m³ of quarry stone were used here.

construction

The viaduct was built by the company Bell from Nuremberg within a year as part of the Odenwald Railway in 1881 . The construction costs amounted to 170,000  marks . Of this, 15,000 marks went to the scaffolding, for which 422 m³ of wood was used. The structure was opened to traffic together with the opening of the Kailbach– Eberbach section on May 27, 1882.

Worth knowing

The railway bridge is a cultural monument due to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .

Similar to the Himbächel Viaduct, the building is a popular photo opportunity.
