Haircut (also: haircut (No.1) ) is a Underground - experimental film by Andy Warhol . It was filmed in 16mm format in a New York loft in November 1963 . The first performance took place by the Film-makers' Cooperative on January 10, 1964 at the Gramercy Arts Theater (138 West 27th Street, Manhattan ). A four-minute excerpt (together with abstracts of Kiss , Eat and Sleep ) of a composition by La Monte Young was shown at the New York Film Festival in September 1964.

action

The black and white - silent film into a length of 33 minutes, the actor Billy Name , Freddy Herko , John Daley and James Waring before that intersect each other's hair. The idea came from Billy Name, who at the time was just moving into the factory as a "girl for everything" and who had learned to cut hair from his grandfather, a hairdresser. In contrast to Warhol's later, purely static films, each of the six rolls of film in Haircut shows the scenery from a different camera perspective and with different lighting.

background

The film is of cultural and historical value because it is one of the first documents ever to portray the social ostracism of "long-haired" men in an ironic way and to show the homosexuality of its actors relatively openly.

In Warhol's estate, further film rolls have been preserved, entitled Haircut No. 2 and Haircut No. 3 now in the Whitney Museum of American Art .
