Hakan Fidan (* 1968 in Ankara ) is a Turkish soldier, diplomat and since May 2010 the head of the Turkish intelligence service Millî İstihbarat Teşkilâtı (MİT).

Career

For fifteen years, from 1986 to 2001, he served as a soldier in the Turkish army , in the end as a non-commissioned officer. He was briefly stationed with the NATO Rapid Reaction Force in Germany . He completed two degrees, Management from the University of Maryland and a Masters Degree in Political Science from Bilkent University with a PhD. From 2003 to 2007 he was Head of State Development Aid . In November 2007 he was appointed Deputy Undersecretary in Erdoğan's Prime Ministerial Office. From May 2010 he was the head of the Turkish domestic intelligence service. Fidan immediately restructured the agency, made it even more powerful by incorporating the military intelligence service into the MİT. On February 7, 2015, he resigned from this position to run for the AKP in the elections to the Turkish parliament . On March 9, 2015, he revoked his candidacy and was returned to his previous post.

Controversy

  • Shortly after his appointment as head of the MİT, the Israeli secret service Mossad accused him of having disclosed sensitive information from the American alliance partner, the CIA, to Iran.
