Hallegger ponds

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hallegger ponds are a group of three ponds in the urban area of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee . They are the core of the nature reserve of the same name .

The ponds are located west of the Kreuzberg in the Hallegger Senke, which lies between Krumpendorf and Wölfnitz . The hollows of the lakes are of Ice Age origin, the geological subsoil consists of mica schists and phyllites of the Upper Eastern Alpine Old Crystalline.

The three ponds are rich in nutrients and are used for fish farming. Volvox , screw algae, star algae and small crustaceans live in the lake . Coot , swan, little grebe and wild duck are common among waterfowl . On the banks you can find the Balkan moor frog, agile frog, common frog, tree frog, common toad, Alpine crested newt and pond newt , as well as grass snake and dice snake . The majority of fish are carp and other white fish.

In the eastern pond, in addition to spawning herbs , the rare water hazel ( Trapa natans ) should be mentioned. The bank vegetation can be classified as near-natural. Pond rushes grow from the water to the land, followed by stiff-sedge- hory and beak-sedge . Black alders and willows grow close to the pond .

The vegetation on the northern pond is similar to the eastern one, but reeds, swamp irises , calamus , broad-leaved cattails and frog spoons are more prominent here. The black alder stock is partly tall here.

Most of the area is occupied by forest. Spruce forests are predominant, while the natural vegetation would be mixed deciduous forest. The greasy meadows in the area are hardly mowed anymore and are therefore covered with bushes.

Nature reserve

The area around the Hallegg ponds has been a nature reserve since 1959, with an area of around 110 hectares. The area is accessed through Hallegger Straße. Several hiking trails lead through the nature reserve. It is a local recreation area for the city of Klagenfurt.
