The Hamilton Harbor is the port of Hamilton , capital of Bermuda Islands. It serves as an important port for passenger traffic, cruises, cargo ships and yachts.

geography

Hamilton Harbor is located between southern Paget Parish and northern Pembroke Parish and is a natural harbor. It forms the end of the Great Sound .

History

The name of the port was chosen based on the adjoining city of Hamilton and goes back to the former governor of Bermuda Henry Hamilton . Before that, the port was called Paget's Port . After Hamilton was named the capital in place of Saint George’s in 1815 , most ships now also docked in Hamilton Harbor.

There are some smaller islands, for example Hinson's Island , Marshall's Island and Hawkins Island , which are located near the port entrance. These, like the small island White's Island in the middle, hinder the entry of larger ships. The Royal Navy widened the fairway in a work extending over several years so that their warships could also enter the Hamilton Habour, which was also very advantageous for the large cruise ships . In 2008, Hurricane Bertha caused some damage to the port facilities.

Meanwhile, the size of the cruise ships has increased further. It is difficult for them to navigate in the Hamilton Habour. There are plans to expand the driveway, demolish islands and redesign or relocate the dock area.

Regatta sailing

Parts of some important sailing regattas , such as the Onion Patch , are also held in Hamilton Harbor .
