The hammer smith is the popular name for a geological outcrop above the Bockauer Talstraße in the local area of Aue . The outcrop is so significant because it shows a contact boundary between the shale (phyllite) formed in the sea and the volcanic granite . The short form Der Hammerschmied is derived from the rhyme lines

"Here volcano and Neptune rest in the granite and phyllite as a hammer smith",

which have been referring to this natural monument by means of a metal plaque since the beginning of the 20th century .

history

The Leipzig geologist Hermann Credner had examined the rocks in the Western Ore Mountains more closely and discovered this special natural phenomenon. In 1910, he had the board put up in a place that was clearly visible from the street. There she informed passers-by for a few decades until vandals removed the board in the late 1990s . When the KabelJournal was being shot in this area , cameraman Friedhold Hamann found the board on the slope in the bushes. It was recovered and reconstructed in cooperation with the city administration, the local writer Lothar Walter and the geologist Ralf Ebert. It was then reattached to its original location.

meaning

Table and rock slope

The verses refer to the mythological significance of Neptune , the Roman god of flowing water and the sea, as well as the influence of fire and volcanism on earthly rock formation . For centuries, scientists argued about the history of the rock formation. The " Neptunists " claimed that all rocks were formed by water. Their opponents, the " volcanists ", took the view that all rocks were of molten origin. Through detailed research, the realization matured that rocks can arise from water as well as from glowing magma . It is now undisputed that the granite, as it is often found in the Ore Mountains, is solidified magma and that the original rocks of the phyllite are deposits of a sea ( sediments ) that were later metamorphically impressed. The Auer Granit is exposed in stone quarries on the slopes of the Bockauer Talstrasse . The phyllite surrounds the granite massif as a contact courtyard .

The term hammer smith, which in the past centuries referred to a widespread profession in the Ore Mountains (blacksmith in a hammer smithy ), makes it clear that the contact points have been united under enormous natural forces and heat development.
