Hampescher Tower

The Hampesche Turm (also Hampe Turm ) is a former defense tower in Hann. Münden in southern Lower Saxony . The 42.5 meter high tower was part of the medieval city fortifications of Münden and was built as a wall tower of the city wall . In the 19th century, the building was increased and used as a scrap tower.

Location and description

The Hampesche Turm is located on the east side of the medieval city center. In this area the city wall ran roughly in a north-south direction. From the Hampesche Turm, the nearest fortifications were on the city wall 130 meters south with the Fangenturm and 100 meters north with the Münden Welfenschloss . To the east of the tower on the former side of the city lies an extensive, tree-lined park, in which ramparts of the city fortifications were found until the 19th century.

The tower is accessible through an entrance door on the ground floor. From the first level, wooden stairs can be used to access the roof.

history

In accounts of the city of Münden from the 15th and 16th centuries, the Hampesche Tower is referred to as the "New" or "Hollow Tower".

Originally the tower, like the other towers of the city wall, was about 26 meters high. After the demolition of the city fortifications at the beginning of the 19th century, the tower was converted to a new use when the farmer Heinrich Ballauf had it increased to 42.50 meters in the 1860s for the production of shotgun pellets using the tower casting process. The shot production started only in 1871 after the acquisition of the tower by the local company Haendler & Natermann . It was already using the ferry gate tower as a scrap tower .

In 1997 the course of the city wall between the Fangenturm and the Hampeschen Turm was archaeologically examined. The measure took place before the new construction of the Duchess-Elisabeth-Stiftes , the building facade of which approximates the course of the city wall.
