Handeni is a district of the Tanga region in northeast Tanzania with the administrative center in the city of the same name, Handeni . The district is bordered by the Manyara region to the northwest , the Karogwe district to the north, the Muheza and Pangani districts to the east, the Pwani region to the south and the Kilindi district to the west .

The district has an area of ​​7290 square kilometers and around 350,000 inhabitants (2012 census). The country is divided into two areas:

  • The plain to the east at an altitude of 200 to 400 meters above sea level. The annual amount of precipitation is between 800 and 1400 millimeters.
  • The hilly zone to the west, which covers about three quarters of the area. The mountain peaks here reach heights of 600 to 1200 meters, it rains 800 to 1000 millimeters per year.

The area is drained by the Msangazi, Manyuzi and Mligaji rivers, all of which flow into the Indian Ocean . The climate in the district is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . The monsoon winds from the southeast bring the precipitation. Short rain showers fall from October to December, long rains are from mid-March to June. Thunderstorms can also occur in the dry season from July to September. The average temperatures are between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius during the day and 15 to 18 degrees Celsius at night. It is coolest in July and warmest in February.

The largest ethnic group in the district are the Zigua , who make up two thirds of the population. The population was 250,244 at the 1988 census. With the separation of Kilindi District, it fell to 193,298 in 2002, to rise to 276,646 in 2012. This year, more than half of those over the age of five spoke Swahili in rural areas, six percent spoke English and Swahili, and just under forty percent were illiterate. In the city, more than three quarters could read and write.

  • Education: There are 117 primary schools and 23 secondary schools in the district (as of 2019).
  • Health: A hospital, two health centers and 33 pharmacies are available to provide medical care for the population. The hospital is run by the Anglican Church .

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: The most important fruits for self-sufficiency are corn, cassava, millet, beans and bananas. Vegetables, fruits (oranges and mangoes), rice, sunflowers, sisal, coconuts, peas, millet, cotton, rice, sunflowers, sisal, coconuts and cotton are grown for sale, and cashew nuts are also grown in the City Council. In 2012, half of the 55,000 households owned farm animals. The animals kept most frequently were poultry, goats and cattle.
  • Mining: There are deposits of gold, copper and iron in the villages of Magambazi, Kwamagome, Kilimamzinga and Kwachaga, as well as finds of quartz, kainite , ruby, garnet, aquimarine, rhodolite, tourmaline and amethyst in the villages of Kidereko, Kwasunga, Chanika Kofi and Kwankonje. These mineral resources are currently not being mined industrially (as of 2020). Handeni Gold Corporation is investigating the gold deposits south of the city of Handeni.
  • Roads: The main road link in the district is the national road T2. It connects Tanga with Dar es Salaam and runs through the east of the district.

Attractions

  • Saadani National Park : In the east, the district has a share of the 1062 square kilometer Saadani National Park. The area was placed under nature protection as early as the 1960s and expanded to double its area in 2002. Wild animals include giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, waterbuck, reedbuck, hartebeest, wildebeest, red duiker, greater kudu, eland, sable antelope, baboons and vervet monkeys.
