The hand-shaped Riccardi moss ( Riccardia palmata , Syn .: Aneura palmata Dumort.) Is a thaleless liverwort .
Identifying features
The moss, with its tiled beds, forms grassy stands. The dark green thalli are about 5 millimeters long and divided in the shape of a hand. The ascending to upright lobes are rather densely packed, linear, 0.3 millimeters wide and rounded at the tip or with weak margins. They are multilayered up to the edges and 4 to 9 cell layers thick in the middle. Epidermal cells are smaller than the subepidermal cells. Oil bodies are present in the subepidermal cells, 1 to 3 per cell, they are egg-shaped to spherical and 9 to 15 µm long. They are mostly absent in the epidermal cells.
The plants are diocesan . The kalyptra is club-shaped and papilose, the spores are brownish, almost smooth and 12 to 15 µm in size. Often spherical to egg-shaped brood bodies are formed at the ends of the thallus .
Distribution and location requirements
The general distribution includes Europe, Azores, Madeira, parts of Asia, North and Central America and the Caribbean. As a sub-oceanic flora element, it occurs in Europe mainly in the western, central and northern parts. In Central Europe it is more widespread in the Alps, the southern German low mountain ranges, the Jura and the Vosges, it is rare in lower mountain regions and it is absent in the lowlands.
The lime-avoiding moss grows in humid, shady locations in forests, mostly on rotten wood, mainly coniferous wood. As a pioneer species with little competition, it is easily overgrown by larger mosses.
