A walkie-talkie or handheld radio or handheld radio (usually abbreviated as HFuG ) is a radio device that has a mains-independent power supply and is designed so that it can be transported by one person and operated in the hand. In amateur radio and professional radio services, for authorities and organizations with security tasks, it supplements the station radio devices that are used as vehicle radio stations (see: mobile radio devices ), land radio stations and relay radio stations . In addition, almost all radio devices in the area of so-called everyone's radio - with the exception of CB radio - are mostly designed as handheld radio devices for licensing reasons.

In the amateur service are many different handheld radios used. Handheld radios can usually work on the 2 m and / or 70 cm band , more rarely also in the 23 cm , 6 m or 10 m band . In terms of transmission, the devices usually only have (narrowband) frequency modulation (10-meter devices often also have single-sideband modulation .) Amplitude modulation and broadband frequency modulation ( radio reception) are often also available for reception . Conventional handheld radios are suitable as standard for the use of relay radio stations. Operation is also possible via Echolink if a DTMF encoder is installed. Devices are also available that are additionally equipped with a module for digital signal transmission according to the D-STAR standard.

operation area

Handheld radios are not only used on bicycles, on field days or on walks, but also in the car or at the location of the registered amateur radio station . Amateur radios are rarely used with BOS radio units on BOS frequencies, although they are not approved for this radio service. Here one takes advantage of the fact that the frequency ranges of modern handheld radios can be expanded. The radios are not only prepared for radio abroad (larger amateur bands are available there), but also for emergency radio .
