Hanho Hopan Rhi (born May 11, 1895 - September 18, 1960 in Schaffhausen ) was a South Korean entrepreneur and judo pioneer in Switzerland .

Life

Rhi was a nephew of the South Korean President Rhee Syng-man . From 1925 to 1936 he studied economics at the law faculty at the University of Zurich . In 1927 Rhi taught judo for the first time in Switzerland and brought this martial art to the country. In 1929 he founded Switzerland's first Jiu Jitsu school in Zurich , although he was already teaching refined judo. His students from this period included Hans Hartmann and Robert Tobler . Rhi was instrumental in founding the Swiss Judo Association in 1936/37. In June 1948 Rhi headed the first association summer school of the Austrian Amateur Judo Association at the Federal Sports School Schielleiten . Rhi achieved the master's degree of 7th Dan in Judo .

Rhi, who last worked as a fragrance producer in Appenzell, Switzerland , was sent in 1954 as the South Korean Consul General for the Federal Republic of Germany to the then seat of government in Bonn . There he rented the house on Leims in Remagen for the consulate general and as his private accommodation . Rhi succeeded in getting the Consulate General to be recognized by the Federal Republic as a commercial agency of the Republic of Korea without the knowledge of his government and thus to receive diplomatic status. In July 1956, Rhi returned to Switzerland after the Korean government objected to his management because of questionable financial transactions.

Rhi was married to Margrit nee Mökli, a Swiss woman from Schaffhausen.
