Hanna Risku (* 27. April 1967 in Mikkeli ) is in Finland born and in Austria operating Professor of Translation Studies at the Center for Translation Studies at the University of Vienna .

Life

Hanna Risku graduated from high school in Mikkeli in 1986. She studied translation and interpreting: German and English at the Institute for Translation Studies at the University of Tampere , where she has already been active several times at the University of Vienna . In 1996 she completed her dissertation at the University of Vienna and in 2003 she qualified as a university lecturer in translation studies at the humanities and cultural studies faculty of this university.

In addition to her mother tongue Finnish , German and English are her working languages, she also has a good knowledge of Swedish and basic knowledge of French and Estonian .

activities

During her studies, Hanna Risku worked as a substitute teacher at various schools in Mikkeli and began working as a freelancer at the Institute for Traffic Technology and Accident Statistics at the Austrian Road Safety Board , for which she also worked as a translator.

Between 1996 and 2000 she was employed as a lecturer at the Institute for Philosophy of Science and Science Studies at the University of Vienna and between 1996 and 1999 as a lecturer at the Swedish University of Skövde at the Cognitive Science Research Group, the Department for Languages ​​and the Department of Computer Science.

From 2001 to 2005 she also worked as a freelance translator for the Press and Information Service of the City of Vienna.

As a guest lecturer, she gave scientific lectures at universities such as the University of Granada , the University of Skövde, the Danube University Krems and the University of Germersheim . In addition, she led workshops in the subject areas of cognition , translation and technical communication, such as for the European Colloquium for User-Friendly Product Information within TCeurope from 2003 to 2010.

Other scientific activities included reviewing special editions of the journal Foundations of Science (FOS) as well as filling professorships in the field of German language and translation studies, jury membership for various tenders and contributions to scientific review procedures for various specialist journals and publishers. From 2012-2018 she was a member of the editorial board of the journal Fachsprache: International Journal of Specialized Communication and advises the Parallèles magazine of the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation at the University of Geneva. She is also a member of the scientific advisory board of ARTIS (Advancing Research in Translation and Interpreting Studies).

Furthermore, she was head of the international department of the Society for Technical Communication (tekom) and President of the European umbrella association for technical communication (TCeurope).

After many years of employment at Danube University Krems and a visiting professorship at the Danish University of Aarhus , she moved to Graz University in 2010 . She became a professor of translation studies there in 2011 and worked until 2017. She headed the Institute for Theoretical and Applied Translation Studies and her courses included lectures on Translation Studies, orientation courses, bachelor seminars, seminars for preparing master's theses, seminars for doctoral and diploma students, translation seminars and a doctoral colloquium.

Since September 2017 she has been working as a professor for translation studies at the University of Vienna.

Research priorities

Her main research areas include cognitive science aspects of translation, ethnography and workplace research of translation, translation-relevant networks, translation as computer-supported cooperative work, translation management, usability, knowledge management and translation.

Research projects

Since 1995 Risku had participated in 19 research projects in the areas of cognition, translation , translational competence, technical documentation, information management and project management in the translation process. This also included the project “ViADUKT - Understandable Information Design for Corporate Communication Technology”, which was headed by the Center for Cognition, Information and Management at Danube University Krems and which ran for three years. It dealt with the design of corporate communication, with particular emphasis on improving the functioning of intranets. The effect of a narrative information system was examined from different perspectives with the aim of demonstrating an improvement in the flow of information within companies. On the other hand, the project “Translation management: a follow-up study”, which is an investigation into the roles, competencies and work coordination of translation managers and looked at changes in the way they work in the translation agency.

For years 2014 to 2017 she received funding from the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research (FWF) for the project Extended translation: Sociocognitive translation processes in the workplace .
