Hannes Jón Jónsson (born February 23, 1980 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic handball player and coach .
Hannes Jón Jónsson moved from UMF Selfoss to Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur (ÍR for short) in 2003 . In 2005 he signed a contract with the Danish club Ajax København . After Ajax ran into financial difficulties, he joined the Norwegian club Elverum Håndball in February 2007. In the summer of the same year he moved to Fredericia HK in Denmark. In 2008 the back player joined TSV Hannover-Burgdorf , with whom he was promoted to the Bundesliga in 2009 . From the 2012/13 season Hannes Jón Jónsson was under contract with the second division ThSV Eisenach . At the end of the 2012/2013 season, Jónsson was voted Player of the Season. In the summer of 2015, Hannes Jón Jónsson moved to the Austrian first division club SG Handball West Wien , where he worked as a player-coach before he dedicated himself exclusively to coaching from 2016. Until January 2019 he coached the SG Handball West Vienna. A month later he took over the coaching position from the German Bundesliga club SG BBM Bietigheim .
Hannes Jón Jónsson played 36 caps for the Icelandic national team , in which he scored 43 goals. With Iceland he took part in the 2008 European handball championship .
In October 2012, Hannes Jón Jónsson was diagnosed with malignant tumors in the bladder, which were surgically removed on October 19, 2012. Jónsson is married and has two children.
