Echinopsis candicans is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet candicans comes from Latin , means 'becoming pure white' and refers to the color of the flowers.

Echinopsis candicans grows shrubby and forms groups 1 to 3 meters in diameter. The initially spherical and later cylindrical, upright or spreading, light green shoots reach a length of up to 60 centimeters and a diameter of 14 centimeters. The shoot apex is rounded. There are nine to eleven low ribs that are usually blunt. The large areoles on it are white and 2 to 3 centimeters apart. From them arise awkward, brownish-yellow and somewhat marbled thorns . The central spines are up to 10 centimeters long. The ten and more unequal radial spines are spread out and have a length of up to 4 centimeters.

The funnel-shaped white flowers are fragrant and open at night. They become 18 to 23 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 11 to 19 centimeters. The spherical to ellipsoidal fruits are red when ripe and tear open lengthways.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinopsis candicans is distributed in the Argentine provinces of Mendoza , San Juan , Córdoba , La Rioja , La Pampa , Buenos Aires and San Luis in the foothills of the Andes and sierras of the Pampa at altitudes of 100 to 2000 meters.

The first description as Cereus candicans by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck was published in 1834. David Richard Hunt placed the species in the genus Echinopsis in 1987 .

Nomenclatory synonyms are Echinocactus candicans (Gillies ex Salm-Dyck) hort. ex whistle. (1837, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 32.1c), Echinocereus candicans (Gillies ex Salm-Dyck) hort. ex Rümpler (1885) and Trichocereus candicans (Gillies ex Salm-Dyck) Britton & Rose (1920). In addition, numerous other taxa were included as synonymous in the very variable species.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
