Hanni Meyer , née Lindenberger , (born February 14, 1921 in Berlin ; † March 4, 1943 in Plötzensee prison , Berlin) was a German cleaner and resistance fighter against the Nazi regime. She was executed as a victim of the Nazi war justice system.

Life and activity

Meyer grew up as the daughter of a working-class family in Berlin and learned the plastering trade. Because of her Jewish descent, Meyer has been politically persecuted since the Nazis came to power. During the Second World War she had to work as a slave labor in the lampshade factory Paulus.

In early 1941 she married Gerhard Meyer .

Politically, Meyer was close to communist views, which is why she became involved in the underground group against the Nazi rule around the former communist youth functionary Herbert Baum from 1941 . The main field of activity of the group was the distribution of pamphlets directed against the Hitler regime. In 1942 Meyer took part in the most spectacular action undertaken by Baum and his followers: the arson attack against the anti-Soviet propaganda exhibition of the Nazis Das Sovietparadies in Berlin's Lustgarten on the night of May 18-19, 1942.

In the course of the breaking up of Herbert Baum's group following the arson attack, Meyer was arrested on May 27, 1942 at the latest, after she had been able to hide briefly from the authorities. She was indicted together with Heinz Birnbaum , Edith Fraenkel , Alice Hirsch , Hella Hirsch , Marianne Joachim , Hildegard Loewy , Helmut Neumann , Heinz Rotholz , Lotte Rotholz , Siegbert Rotholz and Lothar Salinger before the 2nd Senate of the People's Court. In the judgment of December 10, 1942, she was found guilty and, like Birnbaum, Hella Hisch, Joachim, Loewy, Neumann and the Heinz and Siegbert Rotholz (no brothers), she was sentenced to death (Alice Hirsch, Edith Fraenkel and Lotte Rotholz received prison sentences) . The execution took place a few weeks later in the Plötzensee prison by beheading with a guillotine .

Since 1988, a memorial plaque commissioned by the then Kreuzberg district government as part of the “anti-fascist memorial plaque program” and made by the sculptor Claus Korch has been commemorating the house at Ritterstraße 16 (unveiling on December 16, 1988), which stands at the place where the later destroyed lamp factory Paulus, in which Meyer had had to work, had found to them.
