Helmut Neumann (resistance fighter)

Helmut Neumann , also Helmuth Neumann (born July 29, 1921 in Berlin ; † March 4, 1943 in Plötzensee prison , Berlin) was a German worker and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

He was executed in 1943 as a victim of the Nazi war justice system.

Life and activity

“His father was a glazier by profession, he was deported by the fascists to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1942 , from where he never returned. Helmut Neumann attended elementary school from 1927 to 1935 . In the same year he began his apprenticeship as a dressmaker , which he completed in 1938. Since the fascist state withdrew the craft of all Jewish tailors in 1938, he became a homeworker. From September 1940 he was forced to work as a transport worker at Kodak in Kreuzberger Lindenstrasse .

From 1932 to 1938 Helmut Neumann was a member of the Zionist Youth Association. It was here in 1937 that he met Siegbert Rotholz , with whom he has been a loyal friend ever since. Here they also became acquainted with Herbert Baum . They joined the anti-fascist resistance group led by Herbert Baum, took part in Marxist-Leninist training evenings and helped to send illegal documents. "

Today two memorial stones in Berlin dedicated to the Baum group also remember Helmut Neumann by name.

1. Memorial plaque in Berlin at the Weissensee Jewish Cemetery (entrance: Markus-Reich-Platz)
2. This memorial stone, designed by the sculptor Jürgen Raue, was erected in 1981 on behalf of the magistrate of East Berlin without any further information about the resistance action in the Lustgarten
