Hanno Rund (born October 26, 1925 in Schwerin , † January 5, 1993 in Tucson , Arizona ) was a German mathematician.

Hanno Rund received his Ph.D. in 1950 from the University of Cape Town with Christian Pauc. PhD ( Geometry of Finsler spaces considered as generalized Minkowskian spaces ). In 1952 he completed his habilitation at the University of Freiburg and was a lecturer at the University of Bonn from 1952 to 1954 . Since 1954 he taught as a professor at the University of Toronto . He then took on further teaching positions in South Africa at the University of Natal and the Universiteit van Pretoria . In 1967 he became a full professor at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. In 1970 Hanno Rund took over the professorship and head of the Applied Mathematics department at the University of Waterloo , where he had been visiting professor in 1964/65. From 1971 he was a professor at the University of Arizona , where he was also temporarily head of the mathematics department.

Hanno Rund dealt with differential geometry (including in Finsler and Minkowski spaces), calculus of variations and Hamiltonian systems as well as other applications of differential geometry in mathematical physics and in particular in general relativity .

His doctoral students include David Lovelock (* 1938), a British theoretical physicist who received his doctorate from the University of Natal in 1961.
