Originally from Amberg , Stein established himself as a radio broadcaster in the post-war period and advanced to become the chief spokesman for Radio Munich at a young age . In 1947, Stein caused a public stir in this function when he intervened when the head of the cabaret department Helmuth M. Backhaus wanted to hire Heidemarie Hatheyer for his Saturday evening entertainment programs . Stein declared that he “had to report daily on the atrocities that would come to light in the Nuremberg medical trial (...). He could therefore not be expected to work in a house with an actress who played the leading role in the Nazi euthanasia propaganda film I complain . ”23 employees showed solidarity with Stein and announced that the program would be in case that Hatheyer appears to disturb. The works council also agreed with Stein. Backhaus then quit his work at Radio Munich.

In the post-war period, Stein also performed poetry as a radio announcer between musical contributions. He also spoke alongside well-known actors in numerous radio play productions of the time, such as in 1948 under the direction of Walter Ohm as Beckmann returning from the war in Outside at the door of Wolfgang Borchert . Some of these recordings are still available in stores today. In addition, together with Jochen Wimmer , he formed a recognized reporter duo in the equestrian sports sector until 1961, which was also used on television. Only then did he appear as an actor in movies and television thrillers ( Das Kriminalmuseum , Der Kommissar , Der Alte , Derrick ) until the end of the 1970s . In addition, Stein spoke at this time for literature for recordings and for teaching aids for German lessons for foreigners.

Stein married the actress and later also the radio announcer Lieselotte Klingler .
