Hanover is a district ( parish ) in northwest Jamaica . The capital is Lucea . With the exception of Kingston , Hanover is the smallest parish on the island. The national hero Sir William Alexander Bustamante was born here.

history

Hanover was formed on November 12, 1723 . It got its name from the House of Hanover , to which the King of England at the time also belonged. In the middle of the 18th century, Lucea developed into the center of a sugar cane growing area and became a free port . At times it was busier than Montego Bay . Jews from Europe settled in the Parish. After the end of slavery in 1834, the now free farm workers supplied large parts of Jamaica with food. Until the 1960s, Lucea was used as an export port for bananas. A deep water pier is no longer in use today. In 1983 the port was finally closed completely.

geography

Hanover is north of Westmoreland and west of Saint James . In 1999, 67,176 people lived on 430 km², 5,739 of them in the capital. The terrain is mountainous, the highest point is Dolphin's Head which serves as a landmark for ships. Like the surrounding parishes, the limestone floor is criss-crossed by caves.

economy

Agriculture is the most important industry, in particular sugar cane, yams , ginger, rice, allspice , turmeric , breadfruit and arrowroot are grown. In addition, Hanover is known for its cattle breeding.

In contrast to many other parishes, tourism only plays a subordinate role. However, there is a tourist center with several large hotels in Hopewell 25 km east of Lucea.
