Former parishes

The administrative division in parishes has existed since 1655 when Jamaica became British . However, there used to be more parishes than there are today. Most existed in 1865 when Jamaica was divided into 22 parishes . The current division into 14 parishes has existed since 1867, when eight of them were dissolved. The following overview is divided into counties :

Portmore Municipality

Below the parishes there is no further administrative level that would roughly correspond to the municipal level. An exception since 2003 is Portmore Municipality , a separate municipality within Saint Catherine Parish .

Constituencies

The parishes are further divided into constituencies and these in turn are divided into divisions . However, these are purely electoral districts for the election of parish assemblies; they have no administrative relevance.
