Former parishes
The administrative division in parishes has existed since 1655 when Jamaica became British . However, there used to be more parishes than there are today. Most existed in 1865 when Jamaica was divided into 22 parishes . The current division into 14 parishes has existed since 1867, when eight of them were dissolved. Portmore Municipality
Below the parishes there is no further administrative level that would roughly correspond to the municipal level. An exception since 2003 is Portmore Municipality , a separate municipality within Saint Catherine Parish .
Constituencies
The parishes are further divided into constituencies and these in turn are divided into divisions . However, these are purely electoral districts for the election of parish assemblies; they have no administrative relevance.
