The road is one of the oldest in Boston and was originally an Indian trail that provided access to the coast before the first European settlement was established. In the 17th century the street was called Orange Tree Lane , however, was in 1708 after the British House of Hanover in Hanover Street renamed. In 1824, the former North Street and Middle Street also became part of what is now Hanover Street .

In the 1960s, much of the street was demolished to make way for the Government Center to be built. Today there are many shops, cafes, churches and Italian restaurants along the street .
