history

The Old Corner Bookstore in the 19th century

The building was built in 1712 by Thomas Crease as a home and pharmacy . In the same place previously stood the house of Anne Hutchinson , who had held her famous séances there in 1635 and had been expelled from Massachusetts in 1638 due to heresy .

From 1832 to 1865, William Ticknor founded the publishing house Ticknor and Fields in the building, which was later renamed after Ticknor had accepted James Thomas Fields as a partner. In the 19th century, the company was in parts one of the most important publishing companies in the United States and was a meeting place for well-known authors, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow , Ralph Waldo Emerson , Nathaniel Hawthorne , Charles Dickens and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. The publisher had rented the entire building and only used a small part as a sales room . Other premises were also sublet. After Ticknor's death, Fields sold the building to EP Dutton , and the house continued to be sold to other publishers and bookstores.

In the 1950s the building fell into disrepair and was in acute danger of demolition in 1960, but was saved from it by a timely sale to Historic Boston, Inc. for a price of 100,000 US dollars . From 1998 to 2002, the building was home to a Boston Globe sales room , and from 2005 to its bankruptcy in 2009, the American jewelry chain Ultra Diamonds had a shop there. The store has been vacant since then , until July 13, 2011, when the Chipotle Mexican Grill chain announced an upcoming opening in the Old Corner Bookstore .

The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
