The New England Holocaust Memorial is a memorial in Boston in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It commemorates the Jews killed during the Holocaust .

description

The memorial was designed by Stanley Saitowitz and erected in 1995. It consists of six glass towers that visitors can walk through. On the outer walls of each tower, groups of numbers are engraved, which represent the nearly 6 million victims of the Holocaust. Inside the towers there are inscriptions with quotes and smaller stories from survivors.

Each of the towers symbolizes one of the great extermination camps Majdanek , Chełmno , Sobibor , Treblinka , Bełżec and Auschwitz . But they can also be interpreted as a menorah , so that each of the towers stands for a million Jews killed, or as a symbol for the six years from 1939 to 1945 in which the mass extermination took place.

Each tower consists of 24 glass panels. 22 of them each have inscriptions with seven-digit numbers, the two remaining plates contain texts. There are a total of 132 panels with numbers on the monument, each of which is identical to the others. A single plate contains 17,280 different numbers that are repeated across the entire monument. They are arranged in eight columns and ten rows of blocks, each block in turn containing sets of six numbers in a grid of six columns and six rows. There are a total of 2,280,960 numbers on the 132 plates.

One of the inscriptions reads:

The Raspberry
ILSE, A CHILDHOOD FRIEND of mine,
once found a raspberry in the camp
and carried it in her pocket all day
to present to me that night on a leaf.
IMAGINE A WORLD in which
your entire possession is
one raspberry and
you gave it to your friend.

The raspberry
Ilse, a friend of mine from my childhood,
found a raspberry in the warehouse one day
and carried it in her pocket all day
so that she could give it to me on a sheet of paper that night.
Imagine a world in which
all
you have is a single raspberry and you gave it to your friend. "
