The non-profit organization The Bostonian Society is based in Boston in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It was founded in 1881 to prevent the Old State House, built in 1713, from being "dismantled brick by brick" and rebuilt in Chicago .

background

With the aim to save the historic building, before the Boston Massacre took place and in which the United States Declaration of Independence was read, this association was of citizens "Boston's first successful movement for the preservation of history in terms of historic preservation ."

The Bostonian Society runs several programs for child, youth and adult education and has installed placards with brief explanations in historically significant locations throughout the city. The Old State House can also be booked through the Society for events such as weddings or public concerts.

The Old State House

The Bostonian Society operates a museum within the Old State House

Even today, the administration and maintenance of the Old State House - one of the central buildings in the history of the United States and the oldest public house still in existence - are the Society's most important duties . The 18th century structure is located above the MBTA - State Street subway station between the Downtown Crossing district and Boston South Station .

Library

The building is still owned by the City of Boston, so basic maintenance is the responsibility of the National Park Service . However, day-to-day operations are still in the hands of the Society , which has a museum there and a scientific library across the street . The inventory includes records dating back to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1630s . The fund includes a total of around 7,500 books, 350 maps, 30,000 photographs and other sources .

museum

The exhibits in the museum focus on the American Revolution and the Revolutionary War , the Boston neighborhoods, and similar topics of local importance. The artifacts on display include antique rifles and other weapons, old nautical instruments from the era of the sailing ships, reproductions of 18th century London newspapers depicting the British in their views of the War of Independence, and an original cartoon by Paul Revere showing which of the Society in the 1880s. There is also a model of the city as it looked during colonial times.

Souvenir shops

The Bostonian Society has a gift shop in Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market . In particular, children's books and gifts related to Boston history can be purchased there.
