Hans-Dietrich Otto Fritz Gronau (born March 9, 1951 in Neustrelitz ) is a German mathematician .

Life

After graduating from high school in Neubrandenburg, Gronau studied mathematics at the University of Rostock from 1969 with the diploma in 1973, was an assistant there and received his doctorate in 1978 under Gustav Burosch . (Dissertation: Extremal families of subsets of a finite set and the generation of dual vectors by Boolean functions ). In 1982 he completed his habilitation ( on the theory of extremal families of subsets of a finite set ) in Rostock, where he became a university lecturer in 1984. In 1985 he became a full professor at the University of Greifswald , where he headed the Mathematics section from 1986 to 1989 and was professor for discrete mathematics at the University of Rostock from 1992 until his retirement in 2016. From 2010 to 2012 he was director of the institute.

In 2013 he received the Federal Cross of Merit for his commitment to the Mathematics Olympiads and other areas of promoting young talent in mathematics. From 1994 to 2010 he was the first chairman of the Mathematik-Olympiaden eV association, which he helped to found. In 2009 he chaired the jury of the 50th International Mathematical Olympiad. In 2008 he received the Paul Erdös Award from the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions.

He deals with discrete mathematics ( graph theory , theory of designs, cryptology, coding theory, Sperner's theory ).

From 2003 to 2015 he was Vice President of the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications (ICA), an international society for combinatorics.

Christian Reiher is one of his doctoral students .
