Hans-Erich Reineck

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans-Erich Reineck (born July 19, 1918 in Nuremberg ; † August 15, 1999 in Wilhelmshaven ) was a German geologist specializing in sedimentology and marine geology . He was a leading exponent of actuogeology in these areas .

Life

Reineck graduated from the Stein-Hardenberg-Schule in Berlin-Spandau in 1937 and was seriously wounded as a soldier in France in 1940. From 1942 he studied geology in Munich, among others with Ernst Kraus (Alpine geology), worked as a carpenter after the war and continued his studies in Mainz in 1948, where he received his doctorate in 1953 under Horst Falke ( On the Petrogenesis of the Wadern Layers in the North Wing of the near hollow ). He then worked at the Geological State Office of Rhineland-Palatinate before joining the Senckenberg am Meer research center in Wilhelmshaven in 1954 , where he dealt with actuogeological issues in sedimentology. From 1961 until his retirement in 1984 he was director of Senckenberg am Meer . He completed his habilitation in Frankfurt in 1963 ( sediment structure in the area of the southern North Sea ), became associate professor in 1969 and honorary professor in Frankfurt in 1972. He was also visiting professor in Mainz, Heidelberg and Oldenburg.

He developed methods of taking undisturbed sediment samples under water and in the mudflats (box grab, Wattstechkasten) and experimentally investigated the relationship between parameters of deposition processes (flow, grain size distribution) and the deposition forms (e.g. sand ripples) and the sediment structure, as it will later be found in Found rock findings. In addition to the North and Baltic Seas, he conducted research in the Mediterranean, the Gulf of Mexico, the USA (Atlantic and Pacific coast), Taiwan, and East Africa. He was also involved in many reports on the sedimentological effects of construction work on the North Sea coast.

His standard work Depositional Sedimentary Environments has also been translated into Russian and Chinese.

From 1967 to 1971 he was President of the International Association of Sedimentologists. In 1988 he received the William H. Twenhofel Medal and in 1974 the Francis Paker Shepard Medal for Excellence in Marine Geology from the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists (SEPM). In 1988 he received the Wilhelmshaven Prize for Marine Research and in 1998 the Cretzschmar Medal of the Senckenberg Society.
