Hans-Jörg Voigt (born June 7, 1962 in Dresden ) is Bishop of the Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church (SELK) and Chairman of the International Lutheran Council .

Bishop Voigt was born on June 7, 1962 in Dresden and received Holy Baptism in the Evangelical Lutheran Trinity Church in Dresden . He studied Protestant theology in Leipzig, Berlin and Oberursel. He served his vicariate from 1989 to 1991 in the Evangelical Lutheran Kreuzkirche Cottbus .

He was consecrated to the Holy Office of the Church ( ordination ) on December 15, 1991 in the Kreuzkirche in Cottbus. Since then he has been the parish pastor of the old Lutheran parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Otto von Bamberg in Greifswald . On February 11, 2006, he was elected Bishop of the SELK by the Church Synod. This term of office was limited to 12 years. Its introduction took place on June 24, 2006 ( St. John's Day ) in the garden church of St. Marien in Hanover . On April 19, 2018, he was re-elected as bishop at the Synod of the Special Church in the Kreuzgemeinde Stadthagen. His term of office is unlimited. The religious service confirmation took place on May 27, 2018 as part of the 9th Lutheran Church Congress of the SELK in Erfurt. The Concordia Lutheran Seminary of Lutheran Church Canada , founded in 1984, awarded Bishop Voigt an honorary doctorate on May 30, 2014 . His advocacy for the traditional image of the family and the protection of unborn life is given as the reason for being awarded the honorary doctorate. His pastoral letter , “Discovering marriage and the family as a gift from God”, from 2013 had an impact in the context of ecumenism far beyond the realm of his own church. The Protestant news agency Idea named him “Bishop of the Year 2013”.
