Hans-Jürgen Goertz (born April 16, 1937 in Fronza in West Prussia) is a German Mennonite theologian and historian . Thomas Müntzer and the Reformation Anabaptist movement play a central role in his work . In addition, Goertz made a name for himself as a history theorist .

Live and act

Hans-Jürgen Goertz studied Protestant theology , English , philosophy and history in Hamburg , Göttingen , Tübingen and Hillsboro , Kansas. In the summer of 1964 he received his doctorate in theology in Göttingen with a thesis on Thomas Müntzer as a revolutionary theologian. Then he worked as vicar and pastor at the Mennonite congregation in Hamburg and Altona , where he opened the congregation ecumenically and co-founded the working group of Christian churches in Hamburg. Between 1969 and 1972 he worked as a research assistant at the Ecumenical Institute and in the Ecumenical Student Hall of the University of Heidelberg . A habilitation in systematic theology that had already been prepared in Heidelberg could not be carried out in Heidelberg because Goertz would have had to change to the Protestant regional church for this. Part of the habilitation thesis was published in 1980 under the title Spirit and Reality. A study on Erich Schaeder's pneumatology in Göttingen. In 1974 Goertz became senior scientific adviser in Hamburg and in 1982 professor for social and economic history at the University of Hamburg , where he worked until his retirement in 2002. In 1986 he held a visiting professorship at the University of Bern for one semester . Goertz has given guest lectures at Oxford, Cambridge, St. Andrews, Liverpool, New York, Yale and Harvard.

Hans-Jürgen Goertz was chairman of the Thomas Müntzer Society from 2008 to 2016 , and is currently deputy chairman. He is also the co-editor of the Mennonite history sheets published by the Mennonite History Association . Since 2007 Goertz has published the fifth volume of the Mennonite Lexicon .

Due to his research, Goertz is considered an expert , especially on the history of the Reformation . In 2004 Goertz presented an overview volume on German history between 1500 and 1648. Goertz published a biography about Thomas Müntzer in 2015 . It is a revised and expanded version of his Müntzer biography published in 1989. Goertz has dealt with the term anti-clericalism in numerous publications .
