Hans-Jürgen Quadbeck-Seeger

Hans-Jürgen Quadbeck-Seeger (born May 29, 1939 in Insterburg in East Prussia ) is a German chemist, inventor, manager and author. He was Chief Research Officer at BASF and President of the Society of German Chemists .

Life

After graduating from high school in Verden , Quadbeck-Seeger studied chemistry, physics and anthropology in Munich . In 1967 he received his doctorate with a thesis in the field of organic chemistry . In the same year he started at BASF in the paint laboratory, where he dealt with the synthesis of precursors for dyes. In 1969 he became head of the research group in the field of intermediates for the dye and pharmaceutical sectors. In his scientific work he dealt with the problems of genetic engineering . In addition to his research activities, he coordinated the company's links with scientific institutions. Quadbeck-Seeger later took over as director of the central area of ​​the main laboratory. There he was responsible for the areas in which chemistry and biology interact. In 1985 he moved to the Board of Executive Directors of the BASF subsidiary Knoll AG . From 1989 to 1997 he was Head of Research on the Board of Management of BASF AG.

In 1994 and 1995 he was President of the Society of German Chemists . His presidency was under the motto “Chemistry on the move”. During his tenure he enforced the inclusion of a code of conduct in the statutes. Quadbeck-Seeger was involved in two commissions for study reform as well as in the inquiry commission of the German Bundestag “Chances and Risks of Genetic Engineering”. He was a member of the Senate of the German Research Foundation from 1991 to 1994 and a member of the Senate and the Administrative Council of the Max Planck Society from 1996 to 2000.

The University of Heidelberg appointed him honorary professor for industrial chemistry in 1985 . In 1998 he received the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class , and in 2014 the Lorenz-Oken-Medal . In 1999 he was accepted into the inventors' gallery of the German Patent and Trademark Office for services in the field of innovation-integrated environmental protection in the field of chemical product development.

Quadbeck-Seeger published books on innovation as well as popular science books on chemistry.
