At Hertha he played twice under Georg Keßler in the 1975 preparation for the season . However, he could not prevail and only made his competitive debut on the last day of the Bundesliga season 1976/77 in the game at 1. FC Saarbrücken . A week later, Förster came on as a substitute for Gerhard Grau after 112 minutes in the DFB Cup final against 1. FC Köln . Since the game ended 1: 1, it had to be repeated two days later. Förster was not used in the 1-0 defeat at the Niedersachsenstadion . For the 1977/78 season , Kuno Klötzer came as the new coach who led Hertha to third place at the end of the season. Förster was only used five times, however, with one goal against VfB Stuttgart . 1978/79 Hertha could not build on the performances of the previous season in the league. Instead, they made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup . There Förster played the first leg at Red Star Belgrade , which was lost 0-1. In the second leg, won 2-1, he was just as little on the pitch as in the final of the DFB Cup , which was lost 1-0 to Fortuna Düsseldorf after extra time . In 1979/80 , Hans-Joachim Förster was part of the team and played 18 of the first 19 games. Under the new coach Helmut Kronsbein , however, he was no longer able to play and could not prevent relegation. Then Hans-Joachim Förster left Hertha BSC.
