Hans-Joachim Schwark

Hans-Joachim Schwark (born December 26, 1926 in Ribbinnen, later renamed Jägershagen, Gumbinnen district ; † August 5, 2018 in Gera ) was a German university lecturer for animal breeding and one of the most important hippologists in German post-war history.

biography

Hans-Joachim Schwark grew up on his parents' farm in East Prussia. From 1933 to 1941 he attended elementary school in Jägershagen. Between 1941 and 1943 he received a two-stage vocational training - agricultural labor and agriculture apprenticeship. From 1943 to 1944 he was called up for the Reich Labor Service in Kaunas / Lithuania, then from 1944 to 1945 he served an assault gun in the replacement and training department 300 and assault gun brigade 244. From 1946 to 1948 he worked in the agricultural operations of North Rhine-Westphalia and Thuringia . Schwark attended the agricultural college in Eisenach / Thuringia in 1948/1949 . This was followed by a degree in agricultural science from 1949 to 1952 at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . From 1952 to 1957 he was a research assistant and senior assistant at the Institute for Animal Breeding and Dairy Farming in Jena. In 1956 he received his doctorate as Dr. agr. at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the state examination for "Animal Breeding Manager" at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1957 to 1962 he was director of the State Stallion Depot in Moritzburg / Saxony. In 1962 he received his habilitation on Haflinger breeding at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena.

From 1962 to 1965 Schwark was a professor with a teaching position and director of the Institute for Animal Breeding and Animal Nutrition at the University of Applied Sciences for Agriculture in Bernburg / Saxony-Anhalt and from 1965 to 1970 Professor with a full teaching position and director of the Institute for Animal Breeding and Dairy Farming at the Friedrich-Schiller- University of Jena. From 1968 to 1971 he was Vice President of the Central Office for Horse Breeding of the GDR in Berlin and from 1968 to 1990 Chairman of the Breeding Advisory Board of the Central Office for Horse Breeding of the GDR in Berlin. From 1970 to 1992 he was a full professor of animal breeding and head of the cattle and horse breeding department at the University of Leipzig and from 1975 to 1990 director of the animal production and veterinary medicine section .

In 1980 he received an honorary doctorate from the Agricultural Faculty of the Pannon University in Keszthely / Hungary.

In addition to several books on horses and animal breeding, Schwark wrote 400 other scientific publications in specialist journals or chapters in specialist books. As director of the animal production and veterinary medicine section at the University of Leipzig, he succeeded in activating wildlife biology research. From 1980 he organized the colloquia series "Wildlife Biology and Wildlife Management" together with Siegfried Prien, Professor at the Forest Science Section of the TU Dresden in Tharandt, in order to influence the preservation of biodiversity, ecological land use, wildlife management and nature conservation.
