Hans-Martin Henning (* 1959 in Tübingen ) is a German physicist with focus on energy technology . He is professor for "Solar Energy Systems" at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and one of the two directors of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE).

Life

Henning first studied political science and history in Freiburg and social science in Bremen for several semesters . In 1981 he moved to the University of Oldenburg , where he obtained a physics diploma in 1988. Then his doctorate he in 1993 at the same university in physics with a thesis on "regeneration of adsorbents with solar-generated process heat" for Dr. rer. nat. ; his doctoral supervisor was Joachim Luther .

After working as a research assistant at the Institute for Solar Energy Research GmbH in Hanover / Hameln and at the University of Oldenburg, he moved to the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE) in Freiburg as a research assistant. There he soon took on various management positions and in 2009 became deputy director of the institute under the then head of Eicke Weber . Since 2017 he has been leading the organization together with Andreas Bett in a dual leadership.

At the same time he was also active at universities. After rejecting a full professorship for “Climate Engineering” at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences in 2010, he initially accepted a W3 professorship “Technical Energy Systems” at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology , which he held from January 2014 to June 2017 . Since July 2017 he has held the “Solar Energy Systems” chair in the Institute for Sustainable Technical Systems at the Technical Faculty of the University of Freiburg, which is linked to the co-management of Fraunhofer ISE, the largest solar research institute in Europe. He has been a member of the Expert Council for Climate Issues since August 2020 .

In addition, he is active in various committees and acts as spokesman for the Energy Alliance of the Fraunhofer Society. He was also appointed a full member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech). Since mid-2014 he has also been one of the researchers in the “Energy Systems of the Future” project, which is coordinated by the Acatech scientific academies, the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Union of German Academies of Sciences .

His main research areas include in particular energy technology in buildings, sector coupling , solar cooling , solar heating and heat storage .
