Hans-Peter Wiendahl (born February 11, 1938 - July 7, 2019 ) was a German mechanical engineer and university professor .

Life

After completing an apprenticeship as a skilled worker, Hans-Peter Wiendahl studied mechanical engineering at the State Engineering School in Dortmund . After two years at Hoesch AG Westfalenhütte in Dortmund, he continued studying mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University . A DAAD - scholarship enabled him a two-semester studies at MIT in Cambridge United States before he Assistant Professor at Herwart Opitz was machine tool laboratory of the RWTH Aachen. There doctorate In 1970 he worked as a senior engineer and qualified as a professor at Opitz in 1972.

This was followed by seven years at Sulzer Escher-Wyss GmbH in Ravensburg, initially for two years as Head of the Planning and Quality Department, and then for five years as the technical manager of the paper machine industry.

In 1979 Wiendahl was appointed professor and managing director of the Institute for Factory Systems and Logistics at Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University in Hanover, succeeding the founder, Hans Kettner. He carried out this task until his retirement in 2013. The funnel model of the production process proposed by Kettner was expanded to include the entire factory, including storage and assembly, and the logistical characteristics were developed. In the factory planning the concept of the versatile factory and in the handling technology the aerodynamic order and supply of parts arose.

From 1988 to 1992 Wiendahl was engaged in self-administration tasks within the faculty as Vice President Research at his university and from 1996 to 1999 he was chairman of the planning group of the budget and planning commission HPK.

In 1988, on the initiative of Hans Kurt Tönshoff , he and Eckard Doege founded the CIM factory in Hanover, later the Institute for Integrated Production Hanover (IPH), to which he was a member of the management until 2005.

Wiendahl was active in advisory commissions for several funding institutions. So as expert reviewer of the AIF Arbeitsgemeinschaft Industrielle Forschungsvereinigungen Group 3 (Organization) from 1985 to 2015, of which its chairman from 1993 to 1996, as expert reviewer of the DFG Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft 1985 to 2012, of which as technical committee chairman mechanical engineering from 1989 to 1996 and as a member of the steering committee of the Program "Research for Tomorrow's Production" of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research from 1997 to 2005.

Its membership in academies has extended to the University Group Manufacturing Technology (HGF), today Scientific Society for Production Technology WGP (chair 1998/99), the International Research Association for Mechanical Production Technology CIRP since 1989 (chair Scientific Standing Committee Organization STC O from 2001 to 2005) ), as well as the German Academy of Science and Engineering acatech since it was founded in 2002.
